Embrace the Rainbow

Have you ever come across a fabric collection that, the first time you saw it ,you just thought “what fun!” Nothing fussy, nothing pretentious, just fun. That is Night Rainbow by Deborah Fisher, of Fish Museum and Circus. And thanks to Windham Fabrics, Deb and Jen, I got to play with this collection early!

I really leaned into all of the different dots included in the collection (and trust me there are more colors that I didn’t get a chance to use), for a new Step Up pattern, Paving Stones (available here). The idea was to let this fabric shine, and this pattern was the perfect opportunity. And the best part is it comes with a bonus pillow pattern! The entire Night Rainbow range works so beautifully for this design because of the deep saturated colors, which really give the whole collection a beautiful dusky feel.

The Paving Stones Quilt Pattern, like all of the Step Up patterns, focuses on just ONE technique, so that you can learn and then master that technique (learn more about the Step Up Collection here). In this case it is the stitch and flip. What makes the blocks a little different is that they are rectangular blocks, so you also get the experience of working with blocks that aren’t squares. (The only square block is in the bonus pillow.)

Besides the quilt and pillow, I was also able to make a few bonus items; my favorite is the art piece “Primary Colors”, which is actually made of scraps from the quilt. It was a really fun experiment in playing with colors and patterns. I am hoping to make a few more of these different art pieces, so stay tuned for more.
